רעיון 'הצלה' הוקם בניו-יורק לפני כמה עשורים, בשנת 1989 נוסד הגרעין הראשון של מתנדבי הצלה על ידי קבוצת אזרחים שהחליטו ללמוד קורס עזרה ראשונה במטרה לטפל בהתנדבות עד להגעת אמבולנס במקרי חירום רפואיים המתרחשים באזור מגוריהם. חברי הקבוצה עברו הכשרות מתאימות, והחלו לפעול ברחבי הארץ, סניפי 'הצלה' הפזורים ברחבי הארץ פעלו ללא תיאום ביניהם, בשנת 2006 עם פרוץ מלחמת לבנון השנייה נפגשו כלל מתנדבי 'הצלה' בארץ לסייע רפואית, והובן הצורך ההכרחי באיחוד כלל מתנדבי 'הצלה' בארץ תחת ארגון גג אחד, כדי ליצור אחידות הפעלה הן בהיבט המקצועי והן בהיבט התפעולי מכאן נולד שמו הנוכחי של הארגון – 'איחוד הצלה'.
”איחוד הצלה,“ שנוסד בשנת 2006, צמח להיות ארגון שירותי רפואת החירום העצמאי, ללא מטרות רווח, המוכר ברמה לאומית ושפועל על בסיס התנדבות בלבד הגדול ביותר בישראל, כאשר הארגון מטפל ביותר מ-2000 קריאות חירום בכל יום.
6,500 החובשים, הפרמדיקים והרופאים של ”איחוד הצלה“ יוצרים רשת של מגישי עזרה ראשונה המחוברים כל אחד למערכת פיקוד מבוסס GPS, אשר ביחד עם פתרונות ההסעה החדשניים שלנו, מעניקים עזרה מצילת חיים מהיר יותר מכל ארגון שירותי רפואת חירום בעולם, 24 שעות ביממה, 7 ימים בשבוע, 365 ימים בשנה.
”איחוד הצלה“ הפך את הגישה לשירותי רפואת חירום לשיוויונית בכך שהוא מעניק את שירותיו ללא עלות, ועל ידי הזרמת מגישי עזרה ראשונה לזירה בשליש מהזמן של הגעת אמבולנס שיפר את תוצאות הזקוקים לטיפול חירום. המתנדבים שלנו הנוכחים בכל מצב חירום רפואי, מכונים 'המלאכים בכתום' הודות לאפודים הכתומים של הארגון.
