Paramedic Shirel Pupkin and EMT Rabbi Chaim Sassi, both volunteers with United Hatzalah, were awarded the President’s Medal for Civilian Heroism at a formal ceremony held at the President’s Residence in Jerusalem. The medal was presented by President Isaac Herzog in recognition of their life-saving efforts during and following the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023.

On the morning of October 7, while under heavy fire, Shirel Pupkin and other United Hatzalah medical personnel established an improvised field hospital at the Shuva Junction. This site quickly became a central treatment point for dozens of injured individuals, including both civilians and soldiers. Pupkin and her team provided critical medical care under active threat conditions.

Rabbi Chaim Sassi, a volunteer EMT and rabbi at the Hesder Yeshiva in Sderot, responded during the attacks in his city. Despite ongoing gunfire near the local police station, he assisted a wounded police officer and attempted to evacuate another injured individual. During the response, Sassi was shot three times. Despite his injuries, Sassi continued providing care to others while managing his own wounds.

Eli Beer, President and Founder of United Hatzalah, commended the actions of Pupkin and Sassi, stating that their efforts reflect the dedication of thousands of United Hatzalah volunteers who responded on October 7. He noted that their recognition by the President highlights the critical role played by civilian responders in emergency situations.
