CARR, K.C., O.Ont., Donald - On Monday, November 18, 2024 in Toronto, Donald Carr, K.C., O. Ont., passed away at the age of 96. Beloved husband of Judy Feld Carr and the late Annette (Chana) Carr. Loving father and father- in-law of Aaron, Jonathan (Terri), Alan (LeeOna), Gary (Melissa), Adam and Elizabeth (Leonard). Dear brother of the late Phyllis Heaps and the late June Wiener of Leeds, England. Devoted Saba of Alison, Rachel and Talia, Aliza, Ruby, Daniella, Yuval and Yael, Reagan and Audrey, Sara, Jack and Max. Proud great-grandfather (Saba Gadol) of Isaac, Benjamin, Noa, Lily, Amichai, Akiva, Talia and Eitan.

Donald Carr leaves an extraordinary legacy that will touch generations to come. He lived by the principle that all the good that is taken from the community must be paid back in kind.

Born in Leeds, England in 1928 and raised in Cheltenham, Donald Carr came to Canada and entered Osgoode Hall Law School at his uncle's urging, graduating in 1951. He received numerous legal awards and recognitions, including being appointed Queen's Counsel in 1964 (now King's Counsel).

Donald Carr was a founder and senior partner of Goodman and Carr LLP, where he was the firm's Chair for the first 25 years. Later, he was counsel at two other large downtown Toronto law firms. He concentrated on estate planning, estate and trusts administration and charities law. He loved the law, astonishingly retiring from practice in 2022 at the age of 94!

His commitment to community is evidenced by the innumerable advisory boards and volunteer committees he sat on and led for decades. His involvement with Jewish institutions in particular spanned the local, national and international spheres, as he served as: President, the United Jewish Welfare Fund of Toronto; President, Community Hebrew Academy of Toronto; National Vice-President and Hon. Counsel, Canadian Jewish Congress; Vice- President, Toronto Jewish Congress, to name just a few. He also served as the Canadian Jewish News' Chairman Emeritus after more than 20 years as its President.

Though humble and self-effacing, Donald Carr nonetheless received several awards for his service to the community, including an L.H.D. Doctor of Humane Letters from Yeshiva University (1983), and the Order of Ontario (2006), given for his exceptional work in serving as counsel to a wide range of charities and not for profit organizations and for contributing to access to justice through his pro bono legal work.

Donald Carr repaid his profession, his community, his country, and the world far in excess of his fair share. His family, his colleagues, his friends and Jews everywhere will always be grateful.
