A child choking at the dinner table. A sudden allergic reaction. A fall at home. In these moments, there is no time to wait. The first person on the scene is often a child, a parent, a grandparent, or a caregiver.
Before Help Arrives
Even with a rapid emergency response system, the first few minutes are critical. Knowing what to do in those moments can make all the difference. The ability to recognize an emergency and act immediately can help stabilize a situation until professional care arrives.
Training everyday lifesavers
United Hatzalah’s Family Safety Program trains parents, caregivers, and community members in essential first aid and emergency response skills. Participants learn how to:
- Respond to choking
- Perform CPR
- Recognize medical emergencies
- Take immediate action before responders arrive
The focus is simple and practical: what to do in real-life situations, at home and in the community.

The program is delivered in communities across the country, making lifesaving knowledge accessible to those who need it most. In 2025, 629 family safety courses were delivered and 11,844 participants were trained. Each training represents more people prepared to respond in a critical moment.
