On Wednesday morning at 7:30 a.m. in Teveria, United Hatzalah volunteer Paramedic David Merizan began a day of lifesaving that would see him save the lives of three people in separate incidents. The first emergency which David was alerted to, involved an elderly man who suffered a heart attack and collapsed in an old age home. David rushed over to one of his private ambulances and headed to the location of the emergency. 

David owns a private ambulance company, Merizan Ambulance, which he inherited from his father who opened the business in the early ’90s. David’s ambulances are fully equipped with all the advanced technologies, necessary for any medical emergency. David often partners together with United Hatzalah, and the partnership between David’s ambulances and United Hatzalah’s volunteers offers the residents of Teveria the fastest and highest quality emergency medical treatment. 

 

Upon arriving at the old age home, David found two United Hatzalah ambucycles parked outside. The pair of volunteer EMTs were already in the building performing CPR on the unconscious man. David swiftly joined the CPR effort and with the help of David’s equipment and the medications he administered, the team managed to return the man’s pulse quickly. After their patient regained consciousness, David and the two EMTs placed the elderly man in David’s ambulance for quick transport to the nearest hospital. 

 

Later that same day, David responded to an additional three CPR incidents in the span of two hours. The first occurred at 6:30 p.m., David was first on the scene. A 65-year-old woman had suffered from a heart attack and collapsed in her home on HaNassi Weizman street. David was without his ambulance and utilized his United Hatzalah medical equipment that he keeps in a spare medical kit in his car to assist in performing CPR.

 

A couple of minutes later, a mobile intensive care ambulance arrived on the scene and joined in the efforts. The 65-year-old patient regained a pulse after 20 minutes and was transported to the hospital in serious but stable condition.

 

Still later in the evening, David responded to another medical emergency involving a heart attack, this time the incident occurred on Verner Street. A man in his 60s collapsed at home and David was once again among the first responders to perform CPR on the man. After almost an hour of exhaustive resuscitation, the man’s pulse returned and he too was transported to the hospital in serious but stable condition. 

 

But David’s life-saving efforts weren’t yet done for the night as the dedicated paramedic was called upon once again to save another life. The fourth CPR for David that day brought him back to the same old age home that he was at earlier that morning. In spite of having to cross the city once more in his ambulance, David rushed to the emergency and joined the arriving volunteers in another CPR. 

 

“Saving lives is my full-time job, and I couldn’t be happier,” commented David. “When I am not at CPR incidents, which sadly is all too often, I am responding to all different kinds of medical emergencies. From stabbings to visiting elderly people, I do it all. This work is in my blood, and it is part of who I am, part of what makes up my life. I live to do this work. I have been a paramedic for seven years and my partnership with United Hatzalah helps me stay connected to everything that is going on in and around Teveria. It helps me be at the exact place at the right time, which is crucial when saving a life.”
