Yossi Sweed, a volunteer medic with United Hatzalah in Petah Tikva, was going about his evening when his emergency communications device alerted him to an incident nearby. Avishai, 48, had collapsed during a soccer game and required immediate medical assistance.
Yossi arrived on the scene in under three minutes and immediately began life-saving procedures, using a defibrillator from his medical bag to resuscitate Avishai.
“After the electrical shock from the defibrillator, we saw the patient’s heart start beating again. It was a very emotional moment,” Yossi recalled.
An intensive care ambulance soon arrived, and Avishai, now in stable condition and fully conscious, was transported to the hospital for further treatment.
A few days after the incident, Avishai requested to meet with the man who saved his life, and Yossi visited him in the hospital for an emotional reunion.
“Yossi saved my life. I cannot describe in words how grateful I am for his quick response and professionalism,” said Avishai.
Avi Miara, head of the United Hatzalah Petah Tikva branch, stated, “This is a story that demonstrates how critical United Hatzalah volunteers are in saving lives. The speed at which Yossi acted saved Avishai’s life. We are proud of our dedicated volunteers who provide immediate, life-saving responses every day.”
