Here is yet another story of the lifesaving work of one of our incredible volunteers.
After a long day at work, Yehuda Amar of Pardes Chana was about to relax for the evening when he received an urgent call about an attempted suicide. As an EMT with United Hatzalah, Yehuda jumped on his ambucycle, weaved through traffic, and arrived at the residence in three minutes!

The experienced volunteer ran inside the house and found a chaotic scene. The moment he arrived, one frightened person screamed “The girl upstairs is dead!”, and he found that the horrified mother of the girl had fainted in the living room. After Yehuda quickly checked the mother and confirmed that her condition was stable, he leaped upstairs and searched for the girl who attempted suicide. When Yehuda entered the bedroom he found an unresponsive 13-year-old girl lying on the bed with an ominous amount of empty pill bottles nearby.
Yehuda knew that the girl’s condition was serious and that he had to act quickly to save her life. He administered her high flow oxygen, and the girl began to revive. He kept her conscious until an ambulance arrived 20 minutes later. During that time, Yehuda also monitored the mother who had fainted, and although she had regained consciousness, she was still quite agitated. The United Hatzalah volunteer was able to soothe and reassure the girl’s mother by calmly explaining how her daughter’s treatment stabilized her condition and would ultimately lead to her recovery.
Yehuda’s response saved the girl’s life. He is just one of 3,000 volunteers countrywide, who put their own lives on hold, racing out to save others in need of medical assistance at any time, day or night. These lifesavers are true modern-day heroes of EMS, and each has their own personal stories of the lives that they have saved and why they do what they do, just like Yehuda Amar.
